Family Respite Care of Nevada

Family Respite Care of Nevada, formerly known as the Northern Nevada RAVE Family Foundation, was founded in 1995 with the mission to reduce and prevent child abuse and neglect among children with disabilities by offering critical respite care services to families.

We provide respite care to caregivers raising children and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities, including autism, mental and behavioral health challenges, and those in foster and adoptive care, as well as their typically developing siblings. Our goal is to create a supportive, safe, and engaging environment where children and young adults can thrive, while their caregivers receive much-needed breaks to recharge.

Serving families in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, and Elko, our organization operates three main programs: the Family Center for children aged 3 months to 6 years, the Jr. and Teen Center for ages 7-12 and 13-22, and the Respite Voucher Program for families unable to utilize in-person services. Over the past 11 years, Family Respite Care of Nevada has experienced remarkable growth, with our programs expanding more than 600% during this time. However, despite this significant progress, we are only scratching the surface of the need in our community. In our largest service year to date (FY24), we served 663 children and young adults, yet there are over 61,000 children identified in Nevada who could benefit from our services, including 10,000 in Washoe County alone. We currently have a waitlist of over 100 participants hoping to access our programs.

Our work is made possible in part through the generous support of youth, college, and community volunteers, who collectively contribute thousands of hours each year. These collaborative efforts are critical to fulfilling our mission and ensuring that Nevada’s most vulnerable families receive the care and respite they need.
